MARINE JOUMARD, France *Circum Stare*
My name is Marine, I study Graphic Design in Paris but I’d like to become an illustrator. I’m drawing all the time, I take my inspiration and ideas mostly in the History of figurative painting (Surrealism, Symbolism, Art Nouveau, the Pre-Raphaelites, religious painting, academic painting… artists such as Frida Kahlo, Grünewald…) and in music. I have very eclectic tastes, from Black Metal to Electro-pop or Folk music, I take everything that makes me feel a deep emotion, with howling guitars, deep powerful voice, ethereal electronic beats… I listen to a lot of different bands and artists such as Austra, Dark Tranquillity, Florence + the Machine, Deathspell Omega, Chelsea Wolfe, Cult Of Luna, Nick Cave, Electric Wizard… and Anna Calvi of course ! I also read a lot, I’m crazy about Virginia Woolf’s writing and poetry from Paul Éluard and Georges Bataille. What can I add ? I like to laugh a lot and to eat cheesecake.
I discovered Anna Calvi in 2011 with her first album. She was on the cover of a french magazine and I was intrigued. I listened to her music on my computer and I was blown away by her voice. I listened to this album everyday during a month and my roommate had no escape…
I particularly love her sight and her paradoxical character. And she’s a beautiful subject for a drawer.
I wanted to make a portrait based on a picture where she isn’t on stage, a picture less «spectacular » if I can say so. So I’ve chosen a press photography where her hair is untied, because curly hair are very graphic shapes, and with a deep sight with this sensation of frailty. Then I just took my favorite pencils and drew her the way I usually draw.
Song : Love Won’t Be Leaving
Phrase : I draw my name in the sand and I hope it will find you
